A gunman wounded 17 people when he opened fire at a Tuscaloosa bar frequented by students at the University of Alabama and kept firing as patrons ran outside, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred at Tuscaloosa's Copper Top Bar, a popular hangout for college students, at approximately 12:30 a.m. today. Police told ABC News that multiple people were shot, but it is unclear whether students were involved in the shooting.

Those inside at the time of the incident told ABC 33/40 that it sounded like fireworks were going off, while a man who was shot says he quickly realized it was someone on the outside firing into the bar.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson confirmed to The Associated Press that the gunman fired first through a window and then shot at people as they fled the bar.

The 17 victims were being treated at DCH Regional Medical Center, hospital spokesman Brad Fisher said. Four have been admitted to the hospital and two are receiving critical care, Fisher said. It is still unclear if the wounds are from gunshots.

ABC 33/40 reported that the shooting is related to a separate shooting at the Indian Lakes Subdivision in Northport.

Surveillance footage of the exterior of the bar shows a man walking away with what appears to be a gun in his hand.

Sgt. Brent Blankley told The Associated Press that no arrests had yet been made. A press conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET today.
